Pagoda Shoot 2009 Results

20 April 2009

On Sunday, 19th April, archers gathered at The Old Deer Park on Kew Road for the 10th Annual Pagoda Shoot. Bows used were longbows, recurve and compounds with traditional wooden arrows and modern aluminium and carbon fibre arrows. Distances shot ranged from 80 yards to 40 yards.

The Royal Richmond Archery Club first organised this event to celebrate the Millennium and it marks the beginning of the outdoor archery season. The shoot is run under the rules of the Grand National Archery Society and has become a shoot at which National records can be recognised and broken.

The Royal Richmond Archery Club was established in 1873 on its present site of Old Deer Park. As well as serious archery, novelty shoots are held throughout the year and members enjoy a number of social events. Beginners’ courses are held in June each year.

Fixtures lists updated

09 March 2008

Home and Away fixtures have been added for the upcoming outdoor season. They will be amended and updated occasionally, so please check back.

You are encouraged to make a note of any tournaments you'd like to attend. They often fill up quickly, so it's best to book as early as possible. If booking through Leigh, you must pay up front, providing your GNAS number and bow discipline. She will send entries one month prior to the deadline, at the very latest, to avoid disappointment. If you book yourself into a shoot, please inform Leigh of your entry and send the results to James.

Also keep in mind that we are now taking advantage of Saturdays, except when the longbowmen have the field. In general, Saturdays will be for those archers attending tournaments on Sundays who want the opportunity to shoot the club round. To do this, however, you must have another club member scoring your round or it will not count.

We do plan to organise club rounds on the occasional Saturday during the summer for a bit of variety, so please check the fixture list.

If you have any questions, please contact Leigh.

2007/2008 Indoor Season Begins

02 October 2007

RRAC’s indoor season begins on Wednesday, 10 October from 7-9pm at Richmond Tertiary College sports hall in Twickenham. The more help we have with setting up, the sooner we can start shooting, so please try to be on time. The hall can get a bit warm, so dressing in layers is a good idea.

See you there!

Weekends at Malden Bowmen

02 October 2007

As RRAC has limited access to outdoor shooting during the winter, we have arranged with Malden Bowmen to shoot at their grounds on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons. RRAC members can either become associate members of MB or pay per shoot. This allows two flexible options depending on how often you plan to shoot.

Please contact Leigh Walmsley by Friday each week to book into
Malden. Payment is made to MB directly.

We will still shoot one Sunday a month from November to February on the tennis courts at Old Deer Park, weather permitting.

When things got a bit hehated halfway through the shoot, a few members cooled down with a good old fashioned water fight!

Intermediate Archery Course

10 June 2007

Been shooting for a while and now seem to have stopped progressing? Want to learn about the more technical aspects of archery? Uniquely in the area, we offer a course that will take you to the next stage of your archery.

The beginners’ course taught you the basics of archery and got you hitting the boss. Now learn how to shoot consistently, set up and tune your bow, and to take charge of your archery.

This is not a quick-fix course. There are no magic wands that will get you shooting better. However, if you are willing to analyse your archery, be honest with yourself and not make excuses, and open to trying new options, then this is the course for you.

Over six sessions, we cover:

  • setting up a bow;
  • bow tuning;
  • form;
  • aiming;
  • goal setting;
  • the mental game; and
  • stabilisation.

Entrance to the course is by invitation only. This is to ensure that you are able apply the information you will be given to your archery. For example, it’s no good learning to tune your bow if you can’t shoot six arrows and get them roughly grouping. We also try to have participants at about the same level so that you can form a support group to encourage each other after the course.

The course is run by Alan, Lynn and Steve. Please see them if you require any more details or would like to be considered for the next course.

    Summer 2007 Opening Shoot

    22 April 2007

    Today marked the beginning of the outdoor summer season for 2007. Members of Royal Richmond Archery Club gathered on the club grounds, blessed with beautiful weather, for a delicious buffet lunch followed by a National or Western round to kick off the season.

    To see some photos of the event visit the gallery or click here.

    Barry Skinner, the club president, kicked off the season with the following speech:

    I offer a warm welcome to you all to our opening buffet and shoot. We have a brilliant opportunity to start the new season being well feed and watered. A big thanks to our club caterers, Alex and helpers.

    We all now have a chance to renew old friendships, some not seen since last season and begin new ones. We can also make our new members feel apart of the club in a social setting.

    This coming season will be a busy one for all of us. There is no reason why anybody should feel left out of the events planned. This is especially the case with the coming of the new club house and new patio, as well as, associated social events for all of us to join in.

    We have a good take up for our beginners’ courses and hope to encourage those who complete their period of instruction to join us for the rest of the season. Please be kind to new members and make them feel welcome. Remember we were once in their shoes and it can be quite daunting for those first couple of months.

    On a personal note I would like to thank all the unsung heroes of the committee and club members who in any way gave their time and expertise to make the 2006 season a success. A season, I might add that we all enjoyed very much.

    A special mention of acknowledgment goes to our chairman, Alan Want, whose efforts continue to smooth our path through many aspects of our archery year. His charm, charisma and negotiating skills always appear to calm many a troubled waters.

    If you shoot a stick, composite, or compound bow I wish you all success in your endeavours in 2007.

    Barry Skinner
    President, Royal Richmond Archery Club
